How It Started — Building an Entertainment Console.
Playing a little catch-up on the blogging as I have been busy the past few weeks with this project……..
There’s something about the beginning of a woodworking project that I really enjoy. Before the first cut is made, there’s a quiet moment when everything is still just an idea on paper.
A large stack of rough lumber is waiting to be transformed, and I’m standing over my drawings, reviewing each detail and thinking through the process ahead. Soon, the shop will come alive with the familiar sounds of jointing, planing, ripping, and crosscutting.
For me, milling lumber has always been more than just preparation. There’s a rhythm to it—the steady movement of the machines, the smell of freshly cut wood, and the gradual transformation of rough boards into something straight, square, and purposeful. It’s a process that demands attention, but at the same time, allows the mind to settle.
And every good shop session needs the right soundtrack.
Today, it’s The Black Crowes, 12/17/10 Live at the Fillmore. The music is queued up, the drawings are in front of me, and the lumber is waiting.
The finished entertainment console is still somewhere in the future. For now, it’s just a stack of boards, a set of drawings, and the first steps of a new build.
And that’s how it starts.
