The Final Stretch — Watching the Vision Take Shape
The past few weeks in the shop have carried an unmistakable sense of optimism. The entertainment console is nearing completion, and with each step, the feeling grows that everything is coming together just as it should. The Allman Brothers Band are keeping me company with their legendary 1971 Fillmore East recordings. Somehow, the music seems perfectly suited to the moment—the shop is quiet except for the occasional sound of sandpaper, a tool being set down, and those unmistakable guitar riffs filling the air.
The glue-up went together cleanly, without the usual headaches that can turn a straightforward day into a long one. The sliding doors followed the same pattern. They went in smoothly, moved as they should, and gave the console the character I had envisioned from the beginning.
Now, there isn't much left to do. The final stage is all about patience and attention to detail: a little light sanding, a thorough cleaning, and then several coats of oil-varnish finish. Each coat will bring the grain to life and slowly transform the piece from a project on the bench into a finished piece of furniture.
For now, though, I'm enjoying these last days with it in the shop. The work has gone well, the music is good, and the console is finally beginning to look like what I imagined when the first board was placed on the bench.
